LOS ANGELES – The remnants of Hurricane Hilary continue to weaken but are still affecting parts of the West Coast. On Sunday, the storm lashed Southern California with heavy rain and strong winds, causing dangerous flash flooding, debris flows, and power outages.Hilary made landfall in southern California as a tropical storm, the first to hit the state in 84 years. It brought record-breaking rains. At least nine million people were under flash flood warnings Sunday and early Monday.A video shows the side of a road collapsing in Santa Clarita during one of those flash flood warnings. Some areas saw more than half a year’s worth of rain in just a day."If you don’t have a metric for what that’s really like, you’ve never experienced it, especially in a place like the desert. It kind of almost doesn’t even feel real," said Jenny Levy of Palm Springs. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. ST. LOUIS – As students and educators across the area head back to the school, an uninvited visitor is joining them: the heat.An official in the Rockwood School District says they are prepared for the heatwave.“Typically, we monitor the temperatures every day. If it’s above 95 degrees, rather it feels like 95 or above 95, we keep our kids inside,” said Dave Cobb, the district’s assistant superintendent of supervision of schools. “We want them to be safe, and give them plenty of water.”Students arrived at Eureka High School, where the district will follow strict heat index guidelines.“Just as important is the heat. We really take a look at our kids and see how they are feeling, so if you can tell people are hot and getting sweaty and they are tired, we are going to keep them inside,” Cobb said. By EDDIE PELLS (AP National Writer)BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Track, and fame, can be brutal games. Nobody felt that more over the past two years than American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson. On a sultry Monday night a half-world away from where her problems began, the 23-year-old earned a gold medal at world championships in the biggest 100-meter race this side of the Olympics. Her victory, in 10.65 seconds over Jamaicans Shericka Jackson and five-time world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, capped a comeback two years in the making and made good on the mantra she’s been reciting all year — and repeated yet again after her latest victory: “I’m not back. I’m better.”Two summers ago after Olympic trials in Eugene, Oregon, Richardson’s road to the Tokyo Games was roadblocked by a positive test for marijuana. Her name turned into a litmus test in a wide-ranging debate about race, fairness, the often-impenetrable anti-doping rulebook and...Former Avalanche goaltender Jonathan Bernier retires after playing more than a decade in the NHL
