Peyton Stearns, NCAA champ for Texas, beats Jelena Ostapenko, 2017 champ at French Open By HOWARD FENDRICH (AP Tennis Writer)PARIS (AP) — Like many a kid, Peyton Stearns enjoyed participating in sports and tried her hand at plenty.“Soccer, gymnastics, basketball, tennis, whatever,” the 21-year-old American said Wednesday at the French Open after eliminating 2017 champion Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 to reach the third round at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. Then Stearns paused, before adding with a chuckle: “Well, not so much tennis.”By her own admission, she came to tennis relatively late for someone who would end up at its highest level, starting private lessons at age 8. It wasn’t until about three or four years later, the 2022 NCAA champion for the University of Texas explained, that she decided to focus on holding a racket.“Gymnastics was very structured. I didn’t like that so much. I liked to do what I want when I wanted,” said Stearns, who had never played in the French Open’s main draw un...

CEOs got smaller raises. It would still take a typical worker two lifetimes to make their annual pay.

CEOs got smaller raises. It would still take a typical worker two lifetimes to make their annual pay. After ballooning for years, CEO pay growth is finally slowing. The typical compensation package for chief executives who run S&P 500 companies rose just 0.9% last year, to a median of $14.8 million, according to data analyzed for The Associated Press by Equilar. That means half the CEOs in the survey made more and half made less. It was the smallest increase since 2015.Still, that’s unlikely to quell mounting criticism that CEO pay has become excessively high and the imbalance between company bosses and rank-and-file workers too wide. Discontent over that gap has helped fuel labor unrest, and even some institutional investors have pushed back against a few of the most eye-popping packages. The smaller increase came after CEO pay soared 17% in 2021, when boards rewarded top executives handsomely for steering their companies through the pandemic-induced recession. Many of the compensation packages were approved early in 2022 but even a small raise might seem lavish in retrospect agai...

Denver school board set to revisit 2020 ban on armed police in schools The Denver school board will meet Thursday to discuss potential changes to its policy barring armed police in the city’s schools, including a proposal that would allow school resource officers on campuses and another plan that would not. Denver Public Schools’ Board of Education is considering a different approach to school resource officers, or SROs, in response to growing gun violence among teens and the recent shooting of two administrators inside East High School. The board temporarily suspended its 2020 policy prohibiting SROs following the East shooting, but now will consider whether to make permanent changes as Superintendent Alex Marrero works on a new district-wide safety plan. One plan, proposed by board member Scott Baldermann, would allow Marrero to decide when to station police officers inside schools. While the decision would be left to the superintendent, the proposal also sets guidelines on how SROs should operate in schools. For example, they wouldn’...

The nation's best doughnut shop is in California, according to Yelp Do you “go nuts” for doughnuts? Sure you do. We all do. They’re made from fried dough and sugar. We’d be fools not to be interested. But, mind you, most of us don’t go gaga over just any doughnut. We all have our favorite shops and flavors, and we’re always on the lookout for newer, tastier varieties. And while there’s no shortage of shops providing exactly what we crave, there are also plenty of mediocre doughnut purveyors that, frankly, no one has ever gone nuts for.  To help us find the best of the best, Yelp’s team of analysts have compiled their second annual ranking of America's top 100 doughnut shops based on the ratings and reviews of Yelp’s online community. The 2023 list — released ahead of National Doughnut Day on June 2 — includes shops from 27 states and Washington, D.C., though some are more well-represented than others. California, for instance, is home to 10 of the top-rated doughnut shops on Yelp’s list, and virtually dominates the upper rankings with six shops ...
