Christian McCaffrey won’t play Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams, and neither will Ambry Thomas or Arik Armstead. That was about as specific as coach Kyle Shanahan got Monday when discussing who will play and who won’t when the 49ers host the Rams in their regular-season finale having already wrapped up the No. 1 seed, a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.McCaffrey left in the second half with a calf injury, didn’t return, and called it “minor” in the post-game celebration after a 27-10 road win against the Washington Commanders.“We’ll keep him out this week,” Shanahan said. He later added McCaffrey is expected to be full-go for the 49ers’ first playoff game following the bye.“We’re real confident in that and it was good news,” Shanahan said. “Could have been a lot worse. “We’ll take care of him this week and hopefully he’ll get to go during our off week....

Nine people were injured Monday when a BART train derailed and caught fire north of Orinda, causing widespread delays in the East Bay as transit crews worked to clear wreckage from the tracks and nail down what went wrong. The derailment happened shortly after 9 a.m. on a section of the Yellow line train to east Contra Costa County where trains typically switch from one set of tracks to the other, according to Jim Allison, a BART spokesman. Investigators were still working Monday afternoon to determine whether it was caused by human error or a mechanical failure.None of the injuries were considered severe, Allison said. The crash snarled transit access between Lafayette and Orinda, while causing delays along nearby Highway 24 while emergency crews responded to the wreck. Yet officials also expressed relief that the derailment happened on a holiday morning when a fraction of the train’s normal commuters — which can number several hundred people — were on board.“...

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Garrett Nussmeier showed why LSU is confident he’s capable of thriving as Jayden Daniels’ successor. The 13th-ranked Tigers (10-3) launched the team’s post-Daniels era with a 35-31, come-from-behind victory over Wisconsin in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Monday, with a calm Nussmeier leading a 98-yard drive to produce the winning touchdown in the closing minutes.“You do what you have to do to win the football game. It doesn’t matter if you start from the 1, the 2 … you just stick to the process play-by-play, move the chains, move the chains and put the ball in the end zone,” the third-year sophomore said.“That doesn’t just speak to me, it speaks to our entire group,” Nussmeier added. “You can’t do it by yourself. And to go 98 yards with the game on the line, that means a lot to me. To be the leader of the offense, that matters more.”Stepping in to make his first college start after Daniels — the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner — opted out to begin...

With playoffs clinched, Browns may rest QB Joe Flacco, other starters for finale vs. Bengals

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Browns are in both the playoffs and an unusual spot: They can treat their regular-season finale like a preseason game. With a wild-card berth already locked up, Cleveland coach Kevin Stefanski indicated Monday he may rest some starters, including red-hot quarterback Joe Flacco, for Sunday’s final regular-season game at Cincinnati.“We’re working through all those things,” he said. “We’ll have a plan. Obviously, we want to finish strong, so we’ll have a plan moving forward.”This kind of scenario doesn’t happen often in Cleveland. The Browns (11-5) clinched their third postseason appearance since 1999 on Thursday night with a win over the New York Jets. They went into the weekend with a remote chance of winning the AFC North, but those hopes ended when the Baltimore Ravens blasted Miami 56-19.That makes this week’s game against the Bengals (8-8) meaningless, and Stefanski will consider having players rest and avoid injuries as the No. 5 seed Browns ...

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Mohamed Salah headed off to the Africa Cup of Nations on the back of a starring role for Liverpool in its 4-2 win over Newcastle that opened up a three-point lead in the English Premier League on Monday. An individual performance that started with his latest failure from the penalty spot ended with Salah scoring Liverpool’s first and last goals and having a hand in the other two for his team in a chaotic game in wet and wild conditions at Anfield. All of the goals came in an end-to-end second half. The league pauses for the FA Cup and then a winter break lasting much of the rest of January with Liverpool looking the team most likely to stop Manchester City winning an unprecedented fourth straight top-flight title. City was in third place, five points behind Liverpool — and two behind Aston Villa — with a game in hand.Salah, who could be missing until mid-February depending on how far Egypt advances in the Africa Cup, could be the player to lead Liverpool to a...
