LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A jury acquitted a Michigan State Police trooper who was charged with assault for not calling off his dog when a suspect was on the ground with a broken hip.Prosecutors said Parker Surbrook’s police dog, Knox, bit and pulled on Robert Gilliam for nearly four minutes in Lansing in 2020. The man couldn’t flee because of his injuries and had begged the trooper to remove the dog.Defense attorney Patrick O’Keefe said the trooper was following his training while waiting for other officers to arrive. He called it a “highly stressful, potentially lethal situation.”“You can second-guess what I did, but I know what my dog did. He was protecting me,” Surbrook testified.Surbrook was acquitted of felonious assault Tuesday following a three-day trial in Ingham County, the Lansing State Journal reported.Gilliam led police on a high-speed chase after Surbrook suspected a man with him outside a liquor store might be carrying a gun. HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Astros first baseman José Abreu and reliever Phil Maton were placed on the injured list Saturday. Abreu was placed on the 10-day list with lumbar spine inflammation retroactive to Thursday. Maton went on the 15-day list after taking a line drive in the right elbow off the bat of Los Angeles Angels third baseman Eduardo Escobar in the ninth inning Friday night. Abreu said that he received two Cortisone shots in his back Friday and that he was feeling better. He said he hoped his stint on the injured list would be short and added that he’s been dealing with this issue off and on for most of the season. “Yeah, I felt it at the beginning of the season,” he said in Spanish through a translator. “I felt some pain there in the back but it was something I just thought it was normal, and it went away a little bit. Right before the All-Star break I felt it again. … and it went away. But the last time I felt it, it just kept getting worse and worse. And unfor...

PARIS (AP) — Star striker Kylian Mbappe watched from the stands as Paris Saint-Germain began its title defense with a drab 0-0 home draw against Lorient in the French league on Saturday.Mbappe, Neymar and Marco Verratti were all left out by new PSG coach Luis Enrique at Parc des Princes.Mbappe topped last season’s scoring charts with 29 league goals, but was not on the field against Lorient because he is mired in a contract standoff. He wants to play this season and leave for free when his contract runs out, but PSG wants to sell him to stop this happening.Looking pensive, Mbappe sat alongside his younger brother Ethan as PSG struggled to break down a well-organized Lorient, which hit the post from midfielder Laurent Abergel’s shot in the 43rd and went close near the end through midfielder Romain Faivre.Central defender Milan Skriniar, attacking midfielder Marco Asensio, and forward Goncalo Ramos all had their PSG debuts but made little difference.Neymar trained alone on Frida...

MUNICH (AP) — Harry Kane was denied a long-awaited trophy in his first game with Bayern Munich after his team lost 3-0 to Leipzig in the German Super Cup on Saturday. On the same day he signed for Bayern, Kane came on as a substitute in the 64th minute to a roar from the crowd with his team trailing 2-0 but could do little to turn the game around. Instead, Leipzig’s Dani Olmo put on a display of Kane-style clinical finishing to score a hat trick as Bayern’s defensive frailties from last season persisted. The Spain midfielder scored off a loose ball at a third-minute free kick, again with a moment of solo skill just before halftime, and completed his hat trick from the penalty spot shortly after Kane entered the game.Kane greeted the crowd during the pre-game warmups to enthusiastic applause. He has the No. 9 shirt at Bayern, the number previously worn by Robert Lewandowski and 1970s great Gerd Müller.Former Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer was the only one of Bayern’...
